Recently, according to reports on the Google News forum, the Google News team decided to clear their databse from SPAMMY sites and sites that are not crediting the original sources of content they provide to users of Google News. Also, there have been reports that Google is facing a potential lawsuit from the Associated Press regarding the republishing of thier content.
The effect of this recent house cleaning by Google News has damaged several sites that provide real content, as these sites were not credited as the original source of news when they actually were. It appears that the Google News alogorythm is flawed and in my opinion this needs to be corrected quickly to protect the income of several Google News contributors.
In a recent review of Google news it was brought to my attention that one particluar publisher is plagiarising content from Bodog.com and also publishing advertisments for their competitor within the actually content copied directly from Bodog.com. It is this sort of behavior by publishers that is causing a severe amount of damage to the News industry as a whole. Do ethics even exist any more?
Bodog.com recently published this NFL picks preview on their site."The New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears will both be trying to pick up a win on Sunday when they battle at Soldier Field. Oddsmakers currently have the Patriots listed as 3-point favorites versus the Bears, while the game's total is sitting at 41."
A quick search in Google News regaring this weeks upcoming NFL week 14 match-ups and you will find an article in the results of this search string ( http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbs=nws:1&q=nfl+predictions&btnG=Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=) from a company called "Viscosi Media", the article was published by Peter Kent on Decemeber 9th at 12:49 PM. The actual article published on Viscosi Media can be found here. http://www.viscosimedia.com/20101209511/news/sports-betting/nfl-predictions-patriots-vs-bears-odds-week-14 - and is an exact copy of the original source Bodog.com
So in my opinion, Bodog.com should at least be credited for the story despite the fact that there competitor's ads appear in the story.
Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should publishers be allowed to take credit for other writers work? Will Google's new source tags work to prevent this from happening in the future? Does any of this really matter?
What's your OPINION?
